anybody is actually doing anything right now. gregg: what about harry reid? what's his, does he have anything at all maybe towards the end of the week he will put on the table? i've been hearing he will put to a vote an extension of the bush tax cuts for anybody making under $250,000 a year, extend unemployment benefits for some 2 million people that are about to lose them. what are you hearing? >> right. he sounded pretty pessimistic this morning but that could change and there's, kind of a fight, procedurally between the house and the senate in a sense that if reid originates a bill in the senate that would do what you said, people in the house say, well that would be unacceptable because the constitution requires revenue bills to originate in the house. but there is this bill that the house did pass a while back extending tax cuts for everybody. the senate could actually amend that bill. it originated in the house and then send it back and actually get somewhere. you have to remember that john boehner actually gave in on the principle of raising tax rates for the highest earners.

possible we've learned from sources as senate majority leader harry reid works to get republican support in the senate, which he will need if he's going to pass a bill. and so we're still waiting to see exactly what it will look like that the white house wants for the threshold on income tax rates to cut off at $250,000. we will see if that ultimately is what senate majority leader reid rolls out. as of this point in time, we're expecting this to be a limited measure to deal just really with the fiscal cliff, which was supposed to be appear incentive to deal with the long-term fiscal health of the country. not part of this, obviously looking at a big package. >> can you do this even if everything goes right? getting through the two houses. i don't think the house is anywhere near -- they couldn't get a million collars for the cap of the tax rates expiring. so what is the position of the white house aides and the people are you talking to there in terms much getting a deal done? >> well, the difference would be, and when you remember plan "b" failed. it failed to garner enough support amo

harry reid and mitch mcconnell. those talks fell apart fell apart this weekend so cinnamon party leader mitch mcconnell picks up the phone and calls vice president job ion. it was those two guys and they did so here, reaching a deal in the early our mornings. the early and hours of the morning and finally once that happened it paves paved the way for a senate vote which happened last evening and overwhelmingly got support from democrats and republicans. the house guarded to look at it this morning they were not getting a strong sense of support from republicans. if you make any changes to a bill like this it torpedoes the whole deal. the the senate was saying they wouldn't consider anything else in the same bill has to start the senate and the house so any changes that the house would make to it would blow this entire deal of. house republican leaders decided they didn't have enough votes to change it. they decided to bring us both to the floor and this is the result of what you are seeing now. 118 to 60 is what you have got. still though you have a number of republicans who are really

, there's a growing debate out there over whether top senate democrat leader harry reid will even have a plan-c to avoid the oncoming fiscal cliff and whether either side is ready to compromise, find some common ground, to keep our paychecks from shrinking as well. peter barnes is fox business network's senior washington correspondent. and he joins us now. peter, what does all this mean specifically for our taxes? >> well, kelly, it means that on january 1st the nation faces about a $5 trillion tax increase over ten years through the expiration of the bush tax cuts and assuming that congress does not approve its annual patch for the so-called alternative minimum tax and the medicare doc fix that prevents deep cuts in medicare payments. the lapse of the bush tax cuts means top rate would revert to 39.6% from the 5% now but it would go up for lowest income earners. reverting from lowest rate to 15% from 10% now. for investors, capital gains rates would revert from 20% to 15% now. depending on the analysis the average family would pay 2,000 to $4,000 more in taxes next year. but, if you'r

majority agree -- leader harry reid came to the floor and did not have much of an update. if there is is going to be a deal today, it will be between mr. mcconnell and mr. biden. there is little in the way of ongoing conversation between mr. reed and mr. mcca mcconnell. >> what about the mechanics of any deal if there is an agreement at least in the senate -- how quickly can come to the floor and how likely is it we can see action on the house floor later today or tonight or tomorrow? >> it becomes tricky. we know what the allies of any deal would be. they have been bandied around for about two years. translating the outline of the deal in legislative language is difficult and the staff would have to work in overdrive to get that done and they have to make sure all 100 senators know what they are voting on and to make sure there are enough to vote affirmatively before they bring it to the floor. you don't know what the house conservatives will think of any deal that involves an increase in taxes and we don't know what house democrats especially on the liberal side of the
